Warren
Thomson is a graduate of Melbourne University, where he studied
under Roy Shepherd, a pupil of Cortot, and became the first Music
Director of Trinity Grammar School, Melbourne, which he developed
into one of Australia's leading music schools. He became Director
of Studies for the Australian Music Examinations Board in 1972.
He has been actively involved with the Sydney International Piano
Competition since its inception and is the Artistic Director and
Chairman of the jury. He was the foundation Head of the School of
Extension Studies at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, a position
held from 1974 to 1995. When the Conservatorium amalgamated with
the University of Sydney he was appointed the first Associate Professor.
In addition to his position at the Conservatorium he was Chairperson
of the Australian Music Examinations Board in New South Wales 1980-95
and also served as Federal Chairperson, Deputy Federal Chairperson
and Federal Examiner. He was Director of the City of Sydney Cultural
Council and Chairperson of its Music Committee from 1980-99.
In 1975 he initiated a program of workshops and seminars in Sydney
and the country areas of NSW in association with the Australia Council
and the NSW Ministry for the Arts. He has made over thirty recordings
of piano music for teachers and students, as well as giving many
radio broadcasts in Australia and abroad, including a recording
of the piano music of Khachaturian in 1978, the year of the composer's
death, for Moscow radio. His publications, totalling over fifty,
have received critical acclaim both nationally and internationally,
especially the editions of Mozart Sonatas and the Well-Tempered
Clavier, Inventions and Sinfonias of Bach.
In addition to adjudicating at all the major eisteddfods in Australia,
he has given Master Classes in USA, Ukraine, Hong Kong and Singapore.
He has served on a number of international juries, including those
for the Sydney International Piano Competition (1988, 92, 96, 2000
and 2004); the Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition - Moscow
(1982, 1990); the Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition
- Salt Lake City (1991); Cincinnati (1993); the National Concerto
Competition - Christchurch, New Zealand (1994); the UNISA Transnet
International Music Competition - Pretoria (1994); Hamamatzu International
Competition (1994); Horowitz - Kiev, Ukraine (1995, 97, 99); Krainev
- Kharkov, Ukraine (1996); Jose Iturbi - Valencia, Spain (1996);
Cologne, Germany (1996); Schubert International Competition - Dortmund,
Germany (1999); Trani, Italy (2004, 2006 ) In 2005 the 3rd Shanghai
International Piano Competition, China, and the 3rd Tbilisi International
Piano Competition, Georgia. and in 2007 he will be on the Jury of
the China Competition.
He has been the Artistic Director of the Yamaha Australian Youth
Piano Competition since inception in 1994 and in 1995, 1997, 1999,
2001, 2003 , 2005 and for 2007.
In 1987 he was awarded the Order of Australia Medal for services
to music and, in 1995, was made an Honorary Member of the Tchaikowsky
Society of Russia. In 2001 he was made an Honorary Fellow of the
Institute of Music Teachers (Australia) and member of the Organizing
Committee of the Horowitz International Piano Competition, Kiev,
Ukraine. In January 2005 he was made an Honorary Professor of the
Kong Xiang-Dong Music Arts College, Shanghai SIPO Polytechnic, P.R.
China,and in November 2005 Honorary Professor at The Shanghai Conservatory
of Music, P.R.China.
